Supporter Q&A – Matthew Jones

by Addis Army Cricket

Q: What was your first overseas Test match?
A: Melbourne 2013 MCG.  Not the most memorable first test watching England away. Already lost the series before flying out to Australia but a Boxing Day test match for a first test away doesn’t get much better.

Q: What is your most memorable overseas Test match you’ve seen?
A: Cape Town 2020. Over 10,000 England Fans, arguably one of the beautiful cities I’ve been too. The beer is outstanding, flying fish needs to get brought over to England. And after the fairytale summer of 2019 we got a repeat of that on Day 5 with Stokesy doing his thing.

Q: Who is your favourite current England player?
A: James Anderson. Being a Lancashire lad myself the man is outstanding. The levels what he’s achieved in the game is amazing. Even though he’s from the other end of motorway being in Burnley from myself living in Blackburn. From what he’s done in the game makes up for it.

Q: Who is your favourite England player of all time?
A: Alaistar Cook. Grew up watching England Cook open the batting, the most memorable moment sitting in front of the TV at stupid o’clock watching his smash the Aussies around in 2011. Been lucky enough to be there at the ground watching his 290 vs India at Edgbaston and be at the MCG for his 240.

Q: Who is your favourite opposition player of all time?
A: Mitchell Johnson. From the torment he had at the 2010/11 ashes tour to come back what he did against us four years is outstanding. A good bloke aswell, bumped into him in a bar in Perth and had a good chat.

Q: What is your favourite overseas Test ground and why?
A: Newlands. Bit of an obvious answer but a very special ground. Table Mountain in the background is a special sight. I’ve been lucky enough to play on Newlands myself after the Test Match.

Q: Which country is your favourite to tour and why?
A: South Africa. The country has everything. The food, beer, beaches, nightlife, Safari, scenery, sport & the people are mega. Plus your money goes a long way out there compared to an Australian tour.

Q: Of all the cities/towns you visited on town, which is your favourite and why?
A: Three pieces come to mind. Cape Town, Adelaide and Bridgetown. Cape Town is special for everything previously mentioned. Adelaide has a great vibe to it. Great nightlight and one of the best grounds I’ve ever visited. Bridgetown is cool, the people are friendly. The beaches are stunning. Outstanding places. An outside for me is Hamilton in New Zealand close to where Lord of the Rings was filmed.

Q: What is your most memorable non cricket moment on tour?
A: In Port Elizabeth on the 2020  South African tour , had a brief conversation with Matt Prior and Paul Collingwood at the bar. 30 seconds later when me and my friend turned away Prior tapped me on my shoulder and there was 8 tequilas lined up on the bar. Drinking tequila’s with two Ashes winners doesn’t get much better.

Q: What do you enjoy most about touring?
A: Getting to visit all the stunning places around the world. Meeting new people from around the Country. The sun and the beer also play a massive part. Being on tour watching England cricket is a special feeling.
