In many ways Alastair Cook was a throwback to another time. A black and white pathe news time where cricket teams sailed on tour and Tests were just that, a Test. An attritional struggle requiring grit and patience.
The modern game of ramp shots, flat batted sixes and social media has passed Cook by. Thankfully so. He was by nature a cautious captain but learnt as he went along and became more adventurous in his tactics.
He wasn’t a poor captain as many of the more shrill members of the media (and those experts on social media) would have us think. Nor was he a great captain in the Brearley mould. He was however a decent captain and above all else he is a decent man.
