Supporter Q&A – Clarky

by Addis Army Cricket

Q: What was your first overseas Test match?
A: South Africa v England at Newlands, 2nd – 5th January 2000.

Q: What is your most memorable overseas Test match you’ve seen?
A: South Africa v England at the Wanderers, 13th – 17th January 2005. Both teams had scored just over 400 first innings runs, but at the end of day 4, England were struggling on 197 for five. General consensus was that Trescothick, who passed his ton just before the close, would have to bat until lunch for England to get a draw. No one imagined that Banger would bang another 80 banging runs meaning England could declare leaving South Africa two sessions to get 325. They were SKITTLED for 247 with Matthew Hoggard having a blinder, taking 7 for 61. We were on the grass bank, going bananas – Gibbs out for 98 and Jacques Kallis going first ball being particular highlights – and in the evening the rugby club next door was drunk totally dry. A hilarious and memorable night was had by all. A night that is still talked about to this day.

Q: Who is your favourite current England player?
A: Haseeb Hameed. A proper Test batsman.

Q: Who is your favourite England player of all time?
A: Gavin Hamilton, poor f***er. Not really, I haven’t actually got one that spings to mind. Nasser and Thorpey possibly. If pushed I’d say Paul Collingwood – a fine example of what you can achieve with hard work, grit and determination.

Q: Who is your favourite opposition player of all time?
A: Sachin Tendulkar.

Q: What is your favourite overseas Test ground any why?
A: National Cricket Stadium, St George’s, Grenada. I love the journey into St George’s: winding round the coast road then past the harbour on the boogie bus before walking the last mile from the bus station along the sea front to the impressive ground which is nestled into a steep hillside splashed with colourful wooden houses. The rum shacks across the stream are worth a visit too!

Q: Which country is your favourite to tour and why?
A: India. Because it is big and mad and I love everything (well, most things) about it.

Q: Of all the cities/towns you visited on tour, which is your favourite?
A: Bombay/Mumbai. Fabulous architecture, greenery, history and cricket everywhere. And the sea on both sides. Plus plenty of down-to-earth bars.

Q: What is your most memorable non cricket moment on tour?
A: Genuinely so many fantastic experiences, but, while driving across Australia in 06/07 in a small camper van, stopping on the Nullabor Plain miles from anywhere, sitting supping beers under a vast cloudless sky and seeing a shooting star clear as you like was pretty special.

Q: What do you enjoy most about touring?
A: All of the above and more…
