Fantasy T20 cricket - Then versus Now

So heres my latest assignment handed to me by Freddie:

ENGLANDS BEST T20 SIDE MADE UP OF PRE T20 ERA (MUST HAVE RETIRED BEFORE 2003) WHO WOULD GET IN THE SIDE BASED ON CHARACTERISTICS YOU WOULD NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL AT T20, VERSUS ENGLANDS BEST T20 PLAYERS WHO HAVE PLAYED T20 SINCE 2003. WHO WOULD WIN?

Good luck if you understood that cos im struggling !

First I thought I would start with my best ever team. Easy choice (not) so please feel free to laugh, ridicule, make fun of etc etc.

TRESCOTHICK. One of the players I think you would have in all forms of cricket
HALES. With his stats in this form its hard not to pick him. Shame he has brittle bones!
ROOT. Another you would choose in all forms of the game.
KP. Yeah we know he can be a bit of a dick but when he keeps his head down a great player.
COLLINGWOOD. My captain. Nurdler, whacker, great fielder. Shame about the highlights.
STOKES. Anyone who can smash it in a test match like he did in Cape Town has to be in your team.
FLINTOFF. He might try to hit the odd 6 and quick bowling at the death.
JOS. Cleanest and possibly best hitter of the ball from all sorts of deliveries to wherever he wants !
SWANN. Need a spinner so who better than Swanny. Can whack it too if needs be.
BROAD. Great start to his early career but at his 20/20 peak he gets into my team.
GOUGHIE Didn’t play much but I think with his Yorkers, pace, batting and attitude he must be in.
12th man. Ewanoweneuaien Morgan. Close call getting in but he can be the Guinness organiser when we win.

GOLDEN OLDIES 20/20 TEAM.

Trawled back through the list of everyone who has played one day cricket since the first game in 1971 and despite my yearning to go with Brealey- Boycott- Tavare as my 1-2-3 heres my list.

GOOCH. Quality player, think he would have liked giving it a whack early doors.
GOWER. Yeah out of position but with his class I think he would have enjoyed the challenge and gliding it around the park while Gooch bludgeoned it.
FAIRBROTHER. A scamperer, nurdler, hitter when needed. A few names could have gone here but he gets the nod.
LAMBY. Who can forget him whacking Bruce Reid for 18 of the last over to win an ODI in Oz all those years ago. What ? youre all too young ? Bollocks.
BOTH. Nearly got my spot as an opener here as he did it quite a few times for England in one dayers. Not sure how well his bowling would have gone in 20/20 probably 4 for 67 off his 4 overs.
BEN HOLLIOAKE. What a shame we didn’t see this lad go on to be a great. Im sure he would have been a massive success at this format. Amazing talent. Bat, bowl, field. Natural athlete.
ALEC STEWART. Needed a keeper. Could of opened and creamed it about but in here at 7 just in case of emergencies.
TONY GRIEG. My captain. No idea how he would have got on but would have got stuck in, wound people up, whacked a few and bowled spin or seam up.
JOHN EMBUREY. My main spinner. Maybe not many wickets but a canny one day bowler. Decent fielder who could flay it to the boundary if needs be.
GRAHAM DILLEY. I need a couple of wicket takers. Would like to think he might of got a few early ones. Hit the deck hard and who can forget his Headingley assault with Botham in 1981 with the bat.
JOHN SNOW. Another feisty character who would have got stuck in and hopefully caused a few bruises as well as taking wickets (also anyone with a middle name of Augustine deserves a place).

Now who would win ? Interesting. Maybe if no one had played a 20/20 before this match the old boys might have sneaked it but now the youngsters may have a little too much nouse. Thoughts ?

As an after thought I tried to get an alternative team with players who don’t quite fit into any of the above.

Hows this sound.

ALI BROWN. Proper whacker.
NICK KNIGHT. Good improviser.
DEREK RANDALL. LEGEND and great fielder.
HICKY. Would have been great at this format.
DARREN STEVENS. Whacks a long ball and bowls briskly.
CRAIG WHITE. Excellent all rounder.
ADAM HOLLIOAKE. The captain and ultimate street fighter.
IAN BLACKWELL. Somerset legend !! Liked to whack it (and eat and drink lots).
KEITH PIPER. Great gloveman and useful run getter.
DOMINIC CORK. Guaranteed to get up peoples nose.
SIMON JONES. Mind your toes.

Food for thought. Anyway im off to the airport on honeymoon. Enjoy the read. Ps who have I missed out ? CHEEEEERS
