Somerset, the team to beat (ish)

As another season draws to an end and my home county just escaped relegation to the dreaded division 2 , it made me think about past and present teams that have represented the cider boys.

I struggle to remember such a poor Somerset team as this season (I'm sure there have been because we had a spell in div 2 a few years ago) but give them their due they managed to stay up and avoid the embarrassment of playing against Gloucestershire or Leicestershire for at least 1 more season!

I was brought up and played in the youth set ups at Somerset during their most successful period, although even then we still didn't manage to win our first county championship.

Rose, Denning, Richards, Kitchen, Botham, Popplewell, Burgess, Marks, Dredge, Jennings, Garner plus a few others, all names I massively looked up to.

Now with lots of players brought in on dodgy visas for a season or sometimes less it got me thinking of who would make my Somerset XI who have played more than 50 games for my county who played during my lifetime's love of the world's best sport.

They have all qualified to play for England and have played 50 games or more (well 48 apparently for Jos but its my article so b****cks to anyone who picks me up on it)

1. MARCUS TRESCOTHICK
2. BRIAN CLOSE
3. BRIAN ROSE
4. NICK COMPTON
5. IAN BOTHAM
6. JOS BUTLER
7. CRAIG KIESWETTER
8. IAN BLACKWELL
9. VIC MARKS
10. RICHARD JOHNSON
11. ANDREW CADDICK

Well how does that look? Think you can do better with your county and the same criteria?

Ok then you probably can.

In that case I am challenging you to an international with the same criteria. 50 plus games for your county and you must have watched them live (even if it was on tv)(must have been in colour though to make it harder on all the old bastards out there who started off watching cricket in black and white!)

SOMERSET INTERNATIONAL XI

1. JIMMY COOK - SOUTH AFRICA
2. MARCUS TRESCOTHICK - SOMERSET THROUGH AND THROUGH
3. ISAAC VIVIAN ALEXANDER RICHARDS - FROM BEYOND THE LAND OF GODS
4. GREG CHAPPELL - CONVICT COUNTRY
5. IAN BOTHAM - SCUNTHORPE?
6. BRIAN CLOSE - MY CAPTAIN
7. CRAIG KIESWETTER - ENGLISH THROUGH AND THROUGH WOULD HAVE PICKED JOS IF THE CRITERIA WAS 48 GAMES MINIMUM)
8. MUSHTAQ AHMED - PAKISTAN
9. VIC MARKS - CHEWTON MENDIP
10. ANDREW CADDICK - NEW ZEALAND OOPS ENGLAND
11. JOEL THE BIG BIRD GARNER - THE LAND OF MOUNT GAY RUM

Go on then, lets do one more team, you've got to have seen them and they must have played at least 2 games for you (ruling out Andrew Strauss who played 1 game for us when he was trying to get some form back)

1. GRAEME SMITH
2. SUNIL GAVASKAR
3. VIV
4. RICKY PONTING
5. MARTIN CROWE
6. IAN BOTHAM
7. CRAIG KIESWETTER (STRUGGLING FOR A WORLD CLASS KEEPER!)
8. MUSHTAQ
9. VERNON PHILANDER
10. ANDREW CADDICK
11. JOEL

12. LANGER/JAYASURIYA/COOK - They can take it in turns to carry the champagne for beating any other side you lot can put out.

Off now to new venues to watch the 2nd Test match in Dubai with the Editor. I'm looking forward to hearing his side!!

Email your sides to addisarmycricket@hotmail.co.uk

Best wishes
